Landowners and Farmers

The combination of nature conservation, community involvement and wildlife interpretation/tourism encompassed by the Chalk & Hawks Project allows us to offer a variety of services to landowners and farmers.

The project was founded on the conservation work carried out by the Dorset Owl and Hawk Group and this is still important today.

Chalk & Hawks staff or volunteers can survey land and farm buildings for the presence of barn owls (and kestrels) and subsequently advise on the suitability of land and buildings for these birds.

We are happy to advise on conservation measures for barn owls, kestrels and other birds of prey. This advice might be related to habitat management, nest box provisioning, rodenticide use or other issues of raptor conservation.

We can advise on funding available through DEFRA (e.g. Environmental Stewardship) for nest box provisioning and habitat management.

If you are a farmer or landowner offering tourist accommodation you may wish to link with the wildlife tourism/interpretation aspect of the project. Please contact us if you are interested in hosting guided walks, wildlife tours or would like us to provide these services at events you organise yourself. You may also wish to encourage attendees of these events to stay in your accommodation.

Other benefits to land owners and farmers from the Chalk and Hawks Project are:

•  We have Close links to other conservation organisations, eg. DWT, FWAG who can offer advice.

•  Financial benefits from land being used for environmental pursuits

•  Assistance in obtaining green credentials (eco-labels, e.g. David Belamy Conservation Awards)
