Project History

In 2002 Danny Alder and Brian Cresswell formed the Dorset Owl and Hawk Group to enlist the help of local people to make, install and monitor nest boxes for birds of prey, especially barn owls and kestrels. The opportunity of Leader+ funding to expand and develop the work of the group and employ a full time project officer (now Jason Fathers) arose in 2003.

The funding proposal met with success and the “Chalk & Hawks Project” was initiated at the start of 2004. Funding was granted for a three year period (2004-2006).

The project combines the conservation of birds of prey with community involvement and innovative methods of wildlife interpretation.
